COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Terry Benjey Bicycling Foundation will host the local Ride in Silence event this week—riders will honor bicyclists killed or injured on roadways. The ride will begin tomorrow, May 21, at 7 p.m. at Empie Park in Wilmington.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • The Wilmington Police Department is searching for Donald Lee Avery, a 57-year-old man (5-foot-1, around 125 pounds with brown hair and black eyes) last seen on May 16, and they are asking anyone with information to contact them immediately.  WECT
  • Wilmington police arrested 26-year-old Liqueonte Jones on May 15 after a search warrant on Lullwater Drive led to the seizure of 210 grams of methamphetamine, 72 grams of cocaine, and 426 grams of marijuana—he now faces multiple charges and is held without bond.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Single show tickets for the 2025-2026 CFCC Broadway and the Beach season are on sale—Richard Thomas in ‘Mark Twain Tonight!’ tickets were available Monday, May 19 at 10 a.m. and ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ tickets are on sale today at 10 a.m. Tickets for Chicago on May 21, Mamma Mia on May 22, Kinky Boots on May 23, BEETLEJUICE on May 27 and SIX on May 28 will be available at 10 a.m.—tickets can also be purchased at the Wilson Center box office Monday through Friday from 12 to 6 p.m.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community groups—the New Hanover County NAACP, Indivisible, New Hanover for All, and the New Hanover County Association of Educators—will host an Educational Forum on Saturday, May 31 at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., where attendees will network and join a panel discussion on public school funding.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, New Hanover County commissioners presented the recommended budget for fiscal years 2025-26 that sets a 35% tax rate on higher property values, meaning the average home at $581,000 will face a $170 monthly tax bill—$39 more than last year. The budget raises the General Fund from $448.6 million to $488.5 million to support education, public safety, legal aid and economic development, and a community session is set for May 21 at 10 a.m. at the Senior Resource Center with a public hearing on June 2.  FOX Wilmington
  • New Hanover County commissioners on May 19 asked county manager Chris Coudriet to reduce the property tax rate from 35 cents to 33.9 cents so that day-to-day services can be adequately funded while addressing public concerns—Coudriet is expected to present a revised proposal by June 2.  Port City Daily
