COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local boating safety instructor Chris Juall (known as the Qualified Captain) warned boaters today after a yacht ran aground on rocks when the tide fell sharply, urging them to review charts and tides as holiday weekend boat traffic increases and rescue crews freed the vessel with minimal damage.  WWAY
  • At Wilmington National Cemetery — where over 5,000 small American flags have been placed on veterans’ graves — a Memorial Day ceremony will begin today at 11 a.m. to honor those who served.  WWAY
  • Boaters at Wrightsville Beach during Memorial Day weekend should check safety equipment and fuel gauges as Sea Tow crews prepare for busy calls. Captain Ryan Saporito warns that proper checks can help avoid fuel issues — a common problem during this holiday period.  WWAY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Today nearly 30 people were rescued from rip currents along local beaches in New Hanover County — eight at Wrightsville Beach, four at Kure Beach, and 16 at Carolina Beach — and starting this weekend lifeguard stands will be staffed daily until Labor Day.  FOX Wilmington

  • This Memorial Day weekend, thousands of visitors boosted local business at Wrightsville Beach as Surfberry Cafe celebrated its 14th anniversary and prepared for a busy summer; tourists plan to leave on Monday.  FOX Wilmington

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church purchased the former Tileston School from the city in 1989 for $16,950+ and began extensive renovations totaling over $800,000+ to create Tileston Center with offices, classrooms, and a school for grades four to eight, located across Ann Street from the church.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Students from 14 counties, including local advocates, are urging state lawmakers in Raleigh to pass HB 430 (Solly's Law) to reduce teen vaping.  Wilmington Star-News

  • On Memorial Day, the Cape Fear Veterans Resilience Project will offer local mental health support to veterans facing loss and challenges from their service. The initiative seeks to ease the holiday emotional toll in Wilmington.  WECT
