COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Heavy traffic slowed many visitors heading to Wrightsville Beach this Memorial Day weekend, so officials now recommend using Pivot Parking — an online system that shows available parking spots — and remind drivers to file citation appeals within 14 days using a notarized form from the town website.  WWAY
  • YMCA of Southeastern NC opened its Legion Stadium and Robert Strange outdoor pools today in Wilmington for Memorial Day from noon until 5 p.m. — giving locals a relaxed option compared to the busy beach.  WWAY
  • Today is National Missing Children's Day; Monica Caison from the CUE Center for Missing Persons in Leland said families can help boost awareness by creating posters (or holding vigils) for missing children cases across North Carolina.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The fifth annual Port City Highland Games will take place May 30 at 3600 Randall Parkway in Wilmington and feature Scottish athletics, music, dance, and a car show (with proceeds benefiting paws4vets).  Wilmington Star-News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a one-year delay, crews nourished Carolina + Kure beaches in April with fresh sand; Wrightsville Beach was last nourished two years ago using material from Masonboro Inlet.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Crews removed the first of 12 declining trees near the First Presbyterian Church on May 8 for safety, and additional trees on South Third and Orange streets are scheduled for removal following photos taken on May 19 — part of a city project to address hazardous conditions.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The National Weather Service reported that 37 rescues took place Saturday at local beaches—25 at Carolina Beach—with warnings now in effect for Topsail Island, Wrightsville, Carolina Beach, and Kure Beach to alert swimmers to dangerous rip currents. HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, a Coastal Journalism Hub report found a 17-year gap in life expectancy between two Wilmington neighborhoods. Residents and officials linked the gap to issues with healthcare + housing and food deserts and urge enhanced community support to address these challenges.  Wilmington Star-News
