- ➤ Local World War II veteran Oliver Aaron Boykin, born on May 22 (he served on the USS Midway from 1943 to 1947), celebrated his 100th birthday at Casey’s Buffet in Wilmington on Saturday. His family said Boykin still drives himself to McDonald’s every morning and enjoyed a surprise celebration with friends. WWAY
- ➤ A new memorial is being built at Greenfield Lake Park to honor pets that died, a project by Susan Chesson of The Big Paw Project and Eagle Scout candidate Andrew Fairfull that has community and city support. The Rainbow Bridge—modeled after one lost to Hurricane Helene—is expected to be completed by Friday with a dedication ceremony at 9:30 a.m. and welcomes anyone to leave a token in remembrance. WWAY
- ➤ Carolina Beach saw holiday crowds over Memorial Day weekend as the summer tourist season began and the town celebrated its 100th birthday — residents increased overnight from 6,900 to as many as 30,000 while vendors at Carolina Beach Lake Park rose to 150.
