CRIME NEWS

  • The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is searching for 24-year-old Desiree Nicole Turner, last seen at Holly Shelter Road on May 28 — she is five feet nine inches tall, weighs about 150 pounds, and was seen in a lime green shirt with a lavender overnight bag.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Wilmington hosts a busy weekend of concerts, theater, comedy and community events running through early June. Highlights include the interactive play What the Constitution Means to Me at Thalian Hall (with comedy by Rory Scovel at Dead Crow Comedy Room, a farewell show by Ridgewood, reggae by Inner Circle, a concert by Dan + Shay and a library memory event ahead of the downtown branch move).  Wilmington Star-News
  • The 39th Carolina Beach Music Festival will take place June 7-8 at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk with classic beach music on Saturday and reggae on Sunday. Ticket prices are $38 for a day pass and $62 for a two-day pass—children 10 and under attend free, and attendees can reserve tent spaces while facing parking fees.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Cameron Art Museum will open its 'Space Makers: Art and Disability in North Carolina' exhibit on June 7, showcasing over 60 works by artists with disabilities in North Carolina. An opening celebration will be held on June 6 from 6 to 9 p.m.—tickets cost $15 or are free for CAM members, students, and teachers and the exhibit will run through October 12.  WECT
  • The Sunset Beach ‘Sunset Sound Waves’ concert series started on May 28 with a performance by North Tower Band and will bring live music to the town park every Wednesday at 6 p.m. through the end of August. Food trucks and free popcorn (provided by the local fire department) add extra fun as new acts are scheduled each week.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New data from the NCDEQ shows that several landfill sites in Southeastern NC have PFAS levels far above federal drinking water standards, with high GenX, PFOA, and PFBA readings recorded at sites including the International Paper landfill and those in New Hanover, Bladen, and Brunswick Counties — prompting local counties to intensify wastewater treatment and encourage well water testing.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Carolina Beach announced that construction on a new stormwater pump will begin next week and will last until the end of the year. Town officials say the project aims to improve water flow in local areas—ensuring better flood management.  WECT
  • The WMPO board voted 8-5 on Wednesday to approve a resolution that supports studying a toll option as a funding source to replace the aging Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. The decision will let NCDOT examine tolling after warning that the project may not get enough funding without it.  WWAY
