  • Wawa opened its first Wilmington store today at 6800 Carolina Beach Road at 8 a.m., offering free fresh food. The chain will open nine more area locations and plans 90 statewide sites in the next decade (each store costs about $7.5 million and creates 40 jobs).  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher held a groundbreaking yesterday to begin a renovation costing ($65 million) that will add a shark habitat, interactive touch pool, live coral reef, and education center. It will be closed for 30 months while select exhibits remain at Independence Mall.  WECT

  • Officials in Caswell Beach warn visitors not to touch venomous Portuguese man-of-war washing ashore because their long tentacles can deliver painful stings — families and pets should keep a safe distance and seek care if stung.  WECT
