  • WattStar Electric and Waterline Brewing Co. are hosting the 1,000 lb. Crawfish Boil fundraiser today (noon to 5 p.m. at Waterline Brewing Co.) to raise money for Domestic Violence Shelter and Services, featuring Louisiana crawfish, live music by The Rhythm Bones, local vendors, craft beer and food.  WWAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Red Cat Sushi opens above Shark Bar and Kitchen in Wrightsville Beach today — the new eatery serves rolls, nigiri and sashimi for coastal diners.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Wawa opened its first location in the Wilmington area with a VIP preview on Thursday and official opening on Friday. The chain plans to open about 90 stores across North Carolina, including 10 in Wilmington, and welcomed local officials and customers with food samples plus a ceremonial first hoagie preparation.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Fort Fisher State Historic Site hosts a free artillery event today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with cannon demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. in the Fort Grove — living history displays and extra parking at Battle Acre Road complete the day.  FOX Wilmington

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Hanover County Schools has received a three-year federal grant totaling over $1.5 million to boost academic achievement at Rachel Freeman Elementary, Forest Hills Elementary, and Williston Middle School. The funds will support tutors — professional development and classroom supplies to help improve test scores and attendance.  WHQR

FINANCE NEWS

  • Mary Dillingham of Leland won a $100,000 prize from a $20 Ruby Red 7's scratch-off ticket bought at Minuteman Food Mart on Mercantile Drive and collected her winnings on May 28. The game now has only two high prize tickets remaining.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The NCDOT announced that overnight lane closures will begin next week on the Causeway Drive bridge — affecting eastbound lanes from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday through Friday from June 1 to June 26 — and motorists are urged to plan extra travel time.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amelia Matthews, a 15-year-old Wilmington teen with a rare neurological disorder, returned home after an eight‑week treatment program in Los Angeles and now manages her symptoms with sign language and occasional wheelchair use—she and her mother will launch a podcast this weekend to help educate others.  WECT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Adrey Kell boys lacrosse team won the NCHSAA 8A state championship in overtime on May 29, 2026 with junior Cole Stankavage scoring a walk-off goal to seal their victory.  Wilmington Star-News
