COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Carolina Beach will mark its 100th anniversary with a series of events scheduled from March 4 through September 4, and WECT will go live from Lake Park on June 6 (from noon to 6 p.m.) to cover the celebration. The town was incorporated in 1925 and has organized these programs through a Centennial Committee to honor its long coastal history.  WECT
  • The YMCA held its 11th Annual Breakfast for Community on May 30 at the Nir Family YMCA, where Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith shared his personal journey from swimming as a youth. The event raised $209,000 for scholarships that support program access at rates based on income + a step toward a stronger community.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artists are invited to showcase their work at the 29th annual Art in the Arboretum, a juried show held from October 10 to 12 at the New Hanover County Arboretum and N.C. Cooperative Extension in Wilmington (with over 90 artist booths planned). Early registration runs until August 11 for $35, rising to $45 after that date (and young artists will enjoy special activities organized by Dreams and Kids Making It and NHC 4-H Youth Development).  New Hanover County

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County staff had researched a program to inspect century-old historic buildings after public safety concerns following a façade and roof collapse in downtown Wilmington. On Thursday, commissioners decided not to add periodic inspections due to worries over cost, bureaucracy, and government overreach — and the proposal will be removed from the FY 26 budget.  Port City Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Hanover County Health and Human Services at 1650 Greenfield Street in Wilmington offers the WIC program to help pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, infants, and young children receive nutritious foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to health care services. The program is available to eligible families—those earning 185 percent or less of Federal poverty guidelines—and is served during business hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.—5 p.m.  New Hanover County

  • Local restaurants and longtime brewpub owners are preparing for future changes as they celebrate 30 years downtown—marking a milestone that includes updates and plans for renewal.
