  • Nearly 20,000 rubber ducks filled Jungle Rapids' lazy river today for the 11th annual Coastal Duck Derby, which raised over $132K to support homeless youth, survivors, and young families in need. For $5, each duck entered a drawing (for a trip to Hawaii or Italy).  WWAY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An asphalt tank at Ergon Asphalt & Emulsions on River Road caught fire Saturday — leaving charred remains visible Sunday and causing traffic delays as tests confirmed no toxic gases and the Wilmington Fire Department says there is no public danger while the investigation continues.  WWAY
  • An exit near Battleship leading to US 421 was closed after a motor vehicle crash on May 31 at 10:25 a.m. + emergency crews worked the scene while officials advised drivers to seek alternate routes.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new feature explores key sites and events that shaped Wilmington over 250 years; it highlights holiday displays at Thalian Hall, the first public school for Black students, and preserved landmarks that tell the city's storied past.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Endowment announced a $116m grant that will lower tax rates for local school bond projects if the ballot passes in November, easing concerns about rising tax costs. County schools faced a $20m shortfall in 2024, prompting staff moves to maintain salaries and avoid layoffs.  WHQR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington officials denied a variance for a proposed restaurant drive-thru at 4125 Echo Farms Blvd. near Echo Farms Park, halting plans for the new business. The decision was made today by the Wilmington Board of Adjustment.  Wilmington Star-News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Wilmington residents can beat the summer heat at nine local water spots, including Jungle Rapids, Long Leaf Park’s splash pad, and Founders Park, which run seasonal hours through Labor Day.
