COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Good Shepherd Center held a groundbreaking on Monday for SECU The Sparrow along Carolina Beach Road to build 32 supportive apartments for seniors with significant disabilities; the project received funding from the American Rescue Plan and support from the State Employees’ Credit Union Foundation + the city donated the land. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at UNCW say killer whale calls have been detected by underwater hydrophones off the Cape Fear coast, though sightings are rare because the whales usually stay in deep waters—making it unlikely for locals to spot them. Experts note that the animals often avoid humans while following schools of tuna.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents and visitors have contributed to a system where sales tax on most purchases supports budgets statewide as New Hanover used an ad valorem method—dividing funds among four municipalities including Wilmington—while Brunswick and Pender applied a per capita approach that sent tax revenue to 19 and six municipalities respectively, with over $11 billion collected in the 2024 fiscal year.  Wilmington Star-News
  • FEMA denied North Carolina’s request to extend federal help for cleaning up Hurricane Helene debris, leaving a gap of more than $200 million; local officials in Wilmington said the decision raises concerns about future disaster aid. State leaders warned that available local funds may not cover costs as storms become more frequent due to climate change.  WWAY

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Southern Living magazine named Wilmington one of the dreamiest places to live in the Coastal South because its many neighborhoods and beach options are appealing (the magazine noted Wilmington topped its South’s Best Cities on the Rise list in 2024) (only Wilmington and Beaufort were chosen from our state).  Wilmington Star-News
  • Carolina Beach offers a vintage look with a boardwalk, pier and state park (highlighted by a 10-story gondola wheel) and dining at Britt's Donut Shop, Federal Point Grille and Hurricane Alley's (parking is available from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with hourly and daily rates from March 1 through Oct. 31).  Wilmington Star-News
