ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews in Kure Beach responded at 1 a.m. today to a large fire on Clementree Lane after multiple calls of an explosion—heavy fire conditions led to the rear deck collapsing—while a second engine helped control the blaze with no one in the home.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington police are searching for 21-year-old Alejandro Diaz Lopez – he allegedly stabbed a victim during an argument, leaving the victim with non-life-threatening injuries – and ask anyone with information to call 911.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • Carolina Beach is celebrating 100 years this year and offers many dining options for locals and visitors. Popular spots like Michael's Seafood and Island Burgers and Bites show the town's rich history as a beloved beach destination.  WECT
  • Wilmington is set for a busy first weekend in June with outdoor concerts, festivals, art exhibits and theater shows including a performance of Macbeth at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater+free concerts at the Port City Music Festival. The schedule also features local concerts, fundraisers and community days at venues like the Cameron Art Museum and Carolina Beach Boardwalk.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College is hosting a one-stop enrollment night on June 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Union Station downtown Wilmington + attendees can complete admission and residency applications, explore financial aid, meet academic advisors, and register for summer and fall classes.  WECT
  • On Tuesday, New Hanover County school board members learned that draft plans for New Hanover High School would not be shared with the public until the design team finishes tweaks after private meetings with board members and county commissioners. Some board members disagreed with the decision and the board also voted on changes to crowdfunding and advertising policies—steps that may shape the school system’s future plans.  WHQR

FINANCE NEWS

  • Coastal homeowners will face a 16% insurance rate increase starting this month because of hurricane risks + a second phase later in 2025 may raise the total rate hike to about 32%, while inland areas see smaller rises of 7% to 10%.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wilmington City Council approved its 2025-2026 budget on Tuesday, which sets aside $8.6 million for salary increases and $30.5 million for capital repairs while keeping the police mounted unit despite one dissent over a one-tenth cent tax rise. The council also approved two projects to build 144 new multi-family units with plans to adjust local street access—final budget approval is set for June 17.  Port City Daily
