CULTURE NEWS

  • Wilmington has not hosted major music stars like Taylor Swift or Bruce Springsteen, but a local 'six degrees' theory links the city to them—Beyoncé performed with Destiny's Child at UNCW in 1999 and film ties connect Kevin Bacon to local productions, showing that the town is closer to big names than many think.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local school crossing guard Minnie Galloway retired from her role at Trask Middle School after nearly 30 years of service—she began in the 1980s and became a crossing guard in 1999. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Some neighbors in Wilmington are upset as a development on Wrightsville Ave cut down about a dozen live oak trees under an old city code—residents say the loss harms the area’s look—. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Coast Guard upheld USACE’s recommendation that the new Cape Fear Memorial Bridge be built with a 135-foot clearance — removing the 100-foot option from consideration.
