Good morning, Wilmington. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of June.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The NTSB released its final report on a fatal plane crash in Southport that killed the pilot in the summer of 2023 and found the accident occurred after the pilot flew an un-airworthy airplane — maintained with improperly installed batteries leading to oil starvation — following incomplete repairs.  WWAY

CRIME NEWS

  • Early this morning, Wilmington police stopped a stolen vehicle on Market Street when one occupant jumped into the backseat; the car crashed into a median on Kerr Avenue and a female juvenile was detained—WPD says the investigation is ongoing.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents of a Laney High School junior varsity football player said he was benched before the season opener in favor of a player whose family made a $5,500 donation—alleging pay-to-play and harassment by coaches. The family filed a grievance and appeal, but an investigation found no policy violations and the school board later declined to hold a hearing.  WHQR
  • UNCW hosted a panel discussion Monday about the New Hanover Healthcare Career Partnership—funded by the New Hanover Community Endowment—where leaders from UNCW, Cape Fear Community College, New Hanover County Schools, and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce explained how scholarships and housing assistance help nursing students stay enrolled. The event also highlighted initiatives like the Try Teal and Coastal Community Healthcare Fellows programs to build a future workforce in healthcare.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers reported that sea levels along the NC coast are rising faster, and Wilmington is projected to see a 1.77-foot rise by 2050 from 1992 levels. The trend has already increased sunny day flooding in low areas—local officials may use the data to plan for future flood risks.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Coast Guard released its height determination on May 28 for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement, stating the bridge should be built as either a fixed span with a 135-ft vertical clearance and 400-ft horizontal clearance or a drawbridge with a 65-ft clearance—finding no issues with issuing the permit. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is now reviewing two design alternatives as the project cost has risen to $1.1 billion.  WECT
  • For over five years, Wilmington has removed asphalt to reveal original brick on several downtown streets—like Fourth, Orange, South 13th, and Red Cross—showing a blend of historic road design and new paving work.  Wilmington Star-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The North Carolina Climate and Health Program—which sends heat alerts for New Hanover, Pender, and Columbus counties—is at risk of closing after federal funding cuts. Officials said the loss may leave vulnerable groups, including outdoor workers and older adults, with fewer warnings during extreme heat.  WECT
