COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, over 1,000 Duke Energy customers in New Hanover County lost power in areas including Ogden, Myrtle Grove, Medical Center Drive and Princess Place; the outage on Wrightsville Avenue was restored while the cause remains unknown.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Wilson Center at Cape Fear Community College will host Tower of Power and the Robert Cray Band this fall — Tower of Power will perform on September 10 at 7 p.m. and Robert Cray on September 18 at 7 p.m. Tickets will be available online to Wilson Center members today at 10 a.m. and go on sale to the public on June 13 at 10 a.m.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Wilmington will host free mulch giveaways on the last Friday of each month after a strong response to a recent event — the next giveaway will be on June 27 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Legion Stadium’s overflow lot where residents must hand-load the mulch and commercial vehicles are not allowed. Limited stump grindings will be available.  WWAY
  • Pender County Emergency Management and Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry have been awarded $25,000 grants from Duke Energy to boost local storm preparedness. Pender County Emergency Management will use $7,500 to purchase emergency communications equipment—helping officials improve response after Tropical Storm Helene in fall 2024 disrupted services.  WECT
  • The House passed the Maritime Supply Chain Security Act that will secure our ports and reduce foreign technology use, including replacing Chinese-made container cranes at Wilmington's port. Congressman Rouzer said the bill boosts national security — experts warn that a cyberattack on port systems could disrupt trade.  WWAY

  • Several Wilmington restaurants now offer new or expanded brunch menus. Ciana Ristorante Italiano will serve brunch on the first Sunday of each month (with signature dishes and drinks) while Fork n Cork, Rumcow, Tequila Comida & Cantina, and Wing & Fish Company offer varied brunch times and menus.  Wilmington Star-News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Neighbors near Lake Waccamaw attended a meeting at East Columbus High School on Tuesday to discuss a plan to build 4,531 single-family homes on over 1,000 acres along Old Lake Road—residents worry the project may harm wetlands, water quality, and local character. Public feedback, including a petition with more than 1,500 signatures, will be used in plans before the development is reviewed by county commissioners.  FOX Wilmington
