CRIME NEWS

  • Ahmad Shaheed Tate pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on June 23 in New Hanover County Superior Court for the 2021 death of 19-year-old Quashawn Pearsall at Bennett Village Apartments and now faces a 59–83 month prison term with credit for nearly four years served.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Trey’Quan Jenkins pleaded guilty on June 23 to second-degree murder in the killing of Tyshaun Delts in April 2022 in Wilmington — he was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison and Cameron Gerald now faces first-degree murder charges.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thalian Association Community Theatre and Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts will put on the Tony Award-winning musical '1776' from March 13 to 15 as a tribute to the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence signing. The show highlights the debates of the Second Continental Congress as they decide to break away from Great Britain—bringing together the region's top talent.  WECT

  • Veterans can now use their benefits to cover tuition and fees at Cape Fear Community College for its CDL Truck Driving and Paramedic programs—this is the first time in years the college has received VA approval to help eligible students with training costs and monthly support.  WECT
  • Veterans can now use education benefits to cover tuition and fees for Cape Fear Community College’s CDL Truck Driving and Paramedic programs, which have received VA approval for the first time in years. The approved benefits—such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill and Montgomery GI Bill—allow veterans and their families to receive tuition coverage and monthly allowances while they train for steady careers in professional driving or emergency services.  FOX Wilmington

  • The Wilmington Fire Department is handing out free Fireworks Soaking Buckets to help families celebrate a safe Independence Day. Donated by Kilwin’s, the buckets—printed with safety tips—are available on a first-come basis until July 4 at the fire headquarters on 801 Market Street and Station 15 on 3335 Masonboro Loop Road.  WWAY
  • On July 12, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will host an eight-hour boating course for beginners at Boiling Springs Lakes Community Center on 1 Leeds Road—covering required equipment, safe navigation, and emergency procedures. Registration costs $35 for a single attendee or $30 for groups and will only accept cash or check.  FOX Wilmington
  • Wilmington city leaders said a new police chief will be named on July 14 as current chief Donny Williams retires at the end of the month—former chief Ralph Evangelous took over as interim and 45 people applied for the position.  FOX Wilmington
