COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A series of July 4 events are planned across the Cape Fear area — including fireworks, parades, food truck shows and more in White Lake, Southport, Chadbourn, Lake Waccamaw, Whiteville, Burgaw and Surf City. Wilmington will host its annual celebration on July 4 with live music and a fireworks display starting at 9:05 p.m. along the riverfront near the USS Battleship North Carolina — an event free to all.  WWAY

  • Little Caesars is renovating the former GameStop storefront at the Shoppes at Westgate in Leland to open a new pizza restaurant—its sign is now in place as renovations continue.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Airlie Gardens, located between Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach, offers a scenic escape with a 400-year-old oak, Bradley Creek views, a peaceful lake, and an iconic Pergola Garden — known for its unique statues and fountain. The gardens are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with admission fees of $10, $5 for local residents, and $3 for children ages 4-12.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On June 24, New Hanover County Schools Superintendent Dr. Christopher Barnes presented seven options to the board to address nearly $1 million in pre-K funding cuts from recent budget reductions. He endorsed three of these options—with caveats that include closing Mary Washington Howe to save $255,000—before the board votes on a plan in July.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Healthy Opportunities Pilot program in Cape Fear—saving the state thousands by helping over 13,000 residents with 400,000 services in three years—is set to shut down on June 30 after the House budget cut its funding, although the Senate passed a mini-budget with $30 million for partial support. Local groups like WARM NC face delays in vital repairs and safety projects, and program director Sarah Ridout hopes lawmakers will reverse the cut before the new fiscal year starts on July 1.  WECT

  • Trillium Health is donating $2 million to Easterseals PORT Health to design Henry’s House, a respite care facility in Burgaw for children with autism, traumatic brain injury, and developmental disabilities — the check presentation is scheduled for July 2 at 314 Progress Drive.  WECT
