  • At a Wilmington nursing home, 100-year-old veteran Rex Hamilton celebrated his birthday on July 4 surrounded by patriotic decorations and close friends. Hamilton, who flew over 25 combat missions during World War II as an Air Corps pilot and navigator, said his secret to a long life is to treat every person with kindness—keeping life simple.  WECT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Wilmington Police are investigating a fatal crash early Friday morning that killed 43-year-old Melanie Degrazio on Market Street as officers responded to a 911 call shortly before 12:30 a.m. on July 4 and the driver has been identified while Traffic Enforcement leads the investigation.  WWAY
  • Lifeguards at Carolina and Wrightsville beaches rescued five and six swimmers on the Fourth of July—some incidents involved heat-related medical issues—and Captain Shawn Kelly advised swimmers to signal for help and swim parallel to shore if caught in a rip current.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Camp Kirkwood in Pender County teaches children water safety by showing them how to canoe, kayak, and boat while stressing the need for a life vest and the rule to never boat alone — a key safety measure emphasized by Director De-Quan Williams.  FOX Wilmington
  • New Hanover High School’s master plan will be presented to the County Board of Education next week to address safety concerns and classroom space shortages. The proposal offers options that include building a new school on a 70-acre site estimated at $280 million or beginning with a $60 million phased hybrid approach for perimeter security improvements—future phases will add learning spaces over up to 12 years—while the school board has not yet made a decision.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Hanover County submitted a purchase agreement for the 60-acre Bryan Tract off Independence Boulevard to preserve it as community greenspace. The agreement went before the Board of Commissioners on May 5 for review and would cost the county $3.86 million from its Revenue Stabilization Fund—repayable over ten years without raising property taxes.  New Hanover County
