- ➤ Today, community leaders from Wilmington & New Hanover County broke ground on the second phase of Olsen Park improvements, which will add a fenced multi-purpose field, four pickleball courts, and a three-quarter-mile paved trail. Officials said the upgrades will support increased access for park visitors. WECT
- ➤ Susan Chesson of The Big Paw Project and local Eagle Scout Andrew Fairfull built a rainbow bridge in Greenfield Park to honor lost pets after the Chimney Rock bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Helene. - ➤ David Edward Hill, 63, was found guilty of second-degree murder for the 2023 stabbing death of 18-year-old Dayston Ward at Hardee’s in Castle Hayne—witnesses said Hill started the fight over a money dispute and later fled before being caught. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Wilmington police responded just before 2:30 a.m. on Sunday morning to multiple gunshots downtown near Hardwire Tattoo and Body Piercing, where they found 34-year-old Raquan Wilson critically injured; he later died at New Hanover Regional Medical Center and authorities are reviewing surveillance footage while asking the public for help in identifying a suspect. - ➤ The UNCW Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on July 11 to review Phase III of the Student Housing Village and discuss a request for up to $4 million for design and pre-construction services—ensuring the project remains on schedule for Fall 2027. WECT
- ➤ The New Hanover County School Board voted Tuesday to fully fund Pre-K for 540 students by using leftover Title I funds and small budget cuts to cover a $975,000 gap caused by cuts that removed more than 100 spots — keeping the Mary Washington Howe Pre-K Center open.
