- ➤ New Hanover County started Treasure Island Saturday at its Highway 421 headquarters, where residents lined up at 9 a.m. to take free household items on a first-come, first-served basis—each household may choose up to 15 items. - ➤ A Creedmoor woman, 58-year-old Lori Ann Scappino, died at Oak Island on Saturday after emergency crews were dispatched at 5:57 p.m. to a swimmer in distress and worked over 30 minutes to revive her—she was pronounced dead at the scene. WWAY

- ➤ After a bill to require a six-week recreational flounder season failed over shrimp trawling restrictions, the Division of Marine Fisheries said it will hold a limited season this fall — details are pending.
