  • Wilmington Fire Department confirmed a fire broke out at a homeless encampment off Scientific Park Drive near 23rd Street, 2 miles from Wilmington International Airport on July 26 at 5:45 p.m.—no injuries were reported.  WECT

  • Duke Energy has upgraded the power grid in Wilmington to reduce the risk of outages from high summer heat. Its internal team of meteorologists monitors the weather closely—advising customers who depend on electricity for medical needs to prepare for a possible outage.  FOX Wilmington

CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington Police arrested 32-year-old Kishawn Morris on Friday for kidnapping and injuring a pregnant woman on May 24; he is held without bond amid charges (felony first degree kidnapping, felony assault by strangulation, battery of an unborn child, and two counts of assault on a female) and will appear in court on Monday.  WECT

  • The Wilmington Historic Preservation Commission approved plans to redevelop the old Bailey Theater on Front Street—this 1,250-seat theater operated for 40 years and has left only its preserved facade after years of decay—by adding a second floor that will house a restaurant or retailer. ECONOMY NEWS

  • PJM Interconnection reports that rising power use from AI data centers is straining the grid and may boost Wilmington household bills by $25 a month or more and commercial rates nearly 30%. The centers can use up to 30 times more electricity than typical facilities — adding pressure that may lead to continued cost increases if the grid is not improved.  FOX Wilmington

  • Plastic Ocean Project launched its two-month Sustainable Summer campaign to urge residents to curb single-use plastic and clean up beaches — local businesses plan donation days on select dates to support the effort.
