  • The Endowment announced three grants totaling $1.2M to support local nonprofits in New Hanover County—$900,000 for Communities in Schools of Cape Fear to aid teachers, $191,000 for Cape Fear Collective to boost data systems, and $95,000 for Keep Your Hands Off Me to improve support for sexual abuse survivors. All funds are subject to signed grant agreements and a plan of accountability.  Port City Daily

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday night in Wilmington, a suspected impaired driver hit a car at a red light, seriously injuring 16-year-old Isabel Crone on her first day of vacation and leaving her fighting for her life in the pediatric ICU—while the driver, Jeremias Yanes, faces charges for driving while impaired, felony serious injury, reckless driving, and transporting an open container—authorities said.  FOX Wilmington

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Vivace International Music Festival started July 30 and will run through August 9 in Wilmington. This weekend, showcase concerts will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in downtown Wilmington.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The SARUS Festival for Site-specific and Experimental Art will be held in Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach from August 8 to August 10, featuring local, national and international artists in visual art, dance, sculpture and film. New programs include The Breathing Archive—which will auction artworks to support the festival—and the Flow & Drift Contact Improv Mini Retreat, with events scheduled at five venues.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • NCDOT is asking residents to submit ideas for projects in its 10-year transportation plan for 2028-2037 using an online survey or drop-in sessions until Aug. 29 — the agency said ideas may include improvements like new turn lanes or intersection upgrades. Officials said suggested projects cannot cover maintenance work such as patching potholes — and project scores will be released by spring with more comment periods later that year.  WECT
