  • The annual Clear the Shelters campaign kicked off on August 1 and will run through August 30 to help dogs and cats find homes—four county shelters and two rescue groups reported increased owner surrenders and fewer adoptions this year.  WECT
  • The new MLK Center community kitchen is now ready for use at 401 S. 8th St.—applications to reserve the space open on August 21 with rental rates starting at $20 per hour, a $25 storage fee, a $55 application fee and a $200 refundable deposit.  WECT
  • Mallie is a sweet 5-month-old boxer mix from the New Hanover Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Unit who is looking for her forever home; interested adopters can visit at 180 Division Drive in Wilmington (Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.).  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Endowment approved three grants totaling $1.2 million to support local nonprofits that assist teachers, survivors of sexual abuse, and build nonprofit capacity in New Hanover County. Cape Fear Collective will use $191,000 for a capacity-building pilot, Communities In Schools of Cape Fear will receive $900,000 over three years for classroom resources, and Keep Your Hands Off Me, Inc. was awarded $95,000 — each grant is set to improve educational support in the area.  FOX Wilmington

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Beachgoers found a Plover chick stuck in a clam shell on the dunes and brought it to Skywatch Bird Rescue Clinic. The rescue team freed its foot—though one toe was partly lost—and reunited the chick with its nesting colony.  WWAY

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Wilmington now offers 15 indoor activities for rainy days that include museums, shopping centers, and entertainment venues. Many destinations require advance tickets and have set hours—giving residents plenty of options when beach plans are put on hold.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Kimchi Taco will be parked at Wilmington Brewing Company this weekend from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., as noted in the weekly Food Truck Tracker & schedules may change with weather.  Port City Daily
  • Visitors to The LBC Bottle Shop and Beer Yard in Hampstead enjoyed imported and craft beers while WilmyWoodie Wood Fired Pizza served special pizzas like The Betty and custom pies topped with hot honey and ranch.
