  • Wilmington's Fit for Fun Center will reopen on Aug. 6 after being closed since June 30 for new flooring installation — city officials confirmed that all memberships and passes have been extended during the closure.  FOX Wilmington
  • Meadow, a facility dog, comforted patients at Thrive Family Dental in Wilmington on June 16, and Ginger, a golden doodle, greeted patients at Brunswick Medical Center in Supply on June 17—chiweenie Derp and service dog Rune worked as store greeters and models at PAWS Resale Shoppe in Wilmington on June 27.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Two people died in a car accident on Burnett Boulevard near the entrance to Greenfield Park—witnesses said one vehicle was headed south.  WECT

  • A new food truck park in downtown Wilmington will host its grand opening on Aug. 8 — it will offer a fresh spot for local dining and food trucks.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Communities In Schools of Cape Fear is holding its 25th annual 'Stuff the Bus' drive on Aug. 13 and 14 at Office Depot Hanover Center + Staples on College Road to collect new school supplies for students in need across Pender and New Hanover counties. Donation barrels will also be set up at over 60 community sites along with an option to donate online.  WECT
  • Cape Fear Community College students interested in fine arts can now transfer to New York Film Academy through a new partnership (students who finish an eligible associate degree can enter selected bachelor's programs and may get a tuition discount and scholarships).  FOX Wilmington

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tropical Storm Dexter formed off the North Carolina coast on Aug. 3 and moved east-northeast with 45 mph winds; it is expected to become post-tropical by Wednesday and pose no threat to coastal areas.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City crews will start the roundabout project update by closing a section of River Road from Coleman Drive to Independence Boulevard on Aug. 18 and officials said the road will remain closed for six months. Drivers must follow detours using Raleigh Street and Sunnyvale Drive while digital message boards on Aug. 6 warn of changes.  WECT
