- ➤ Wilmington’s first food truck park in the Brooklyn Arts District will open Friday after a year and a half of planning—this outdoor venue features colorful shipping containers that house food trucks, a bar, and local art. The park will host a rotating schedule of vendors including the new Peruvian food truck Gusto Peruano, which will serve traditional dishes from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Aug. 8 and offer DJ Rizzy Beats from 7 to 10 p.m. Port City Daily

- ➤ A deadly shooting occurred on July 6 in downtown Wilmington when five gunshots were fired and a caller screamed for help (911 audio captured chaotic background noise) as officers transported 34-year-old Raquan Wilson to Novant Health where he later died while police investigate the homicide. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Today, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources awarded a $2.5-million grant from NOAA to Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic site in Winnabow to help restore its eroding shoreline after the site lost a dozen acres over 81 years, and the funds will pay for wave attenuators that slow erosion and help restore natural habitats. - ➤ On August 5, the Wilmington City Council voted on an ordinance banning sleeping on city property to limit camping between 10 p.m.—7 a.m. Councilman Luke Waddell said the rule aimed to boost safety for downtown business areas while local shelter managers warned it might worsen the challenges for people facing homelessness. - ➤ Wilmington City Council tabled a proposal to ban sleeping on city property overnight from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and will revisit the issue in September—leaders noted that growing homelessness and complaints from downtown business owners show the need for improved shelter services. WECT
- ➤ The North Carolina State Board of Elections reminds residents that to vote in the November 4 municipal election, registration must be completed by October 10 at 5 p.m. (only those living within official municipal boundaries qualify) and notes that eligible voters who miss the deadline may register during early voting if offered. - ➤ At a special meeting on Monday, the board voted 5-2 to remove board member David Perry from his policy committee seat for four months over alleged confidentiality and ethics breaches — the board stopped short of a full censure.
