  • Today, Vigilant Hope holds a meeting at a coffee shop on 16th Street in Wilmington to discuss a safe parking initiative that would allow people to park and sleep in their vehicles legally. More than 50 locals are living in their cars — and organizers seek churches, volunteers and partners to help expand the program.  WECT
  • The inaugural Taste of Truckz food festival will take place on Saturday, August 23 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Cape Fear Community College Schwartz Center parking lot—featuring food trucks, live music, beer and wine, a People’s Choice contest, and a Kids Zone sponsored by United Bank—and will raise funds to support local food entrepreneurs and a future Food Innovation Campus.  WWAY

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 1, a Pender County jury convicted a Burgaw man of first degree forcible rape, kidnapping, and assault charges after he broke into a Hampstead home in 2023 and raped a woman multiple times — he had prior sexual assault felony convictions in New York and South Carolina — and he will serve 26.5 to 39 years in prison.  WWAY

  • Oak Island Water Rescue decommissioned its hovercraft Tuesday evening—after years of helping rescue people along the Cape Fear coast—and donated it to the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport, where it will serve as an exhibit on maritime safety. The display will teach visitors about the challenges faced by coastal emergency teams.  WWAY
  • Les Claypool and Primus performed a lively concert on July 26 at Live Oak Bank Pavilion in downtown Wilmington, playing songs like 'American Life' while introducing new drummer John Hoffman selected from 6,200 applicants. Mono Neon opened the show and the band played amid soaring heat (temps exceeded 100°F) as the crowd enjoyed an energetic night of experimental rock.  Port City Daily
