COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cinnamon, a young dog from Freedom Bridge Animal Rescue, is looking for her forever home. She is energetic and loves people and other dogs — although she is healing from a leg injury and is still finishing her vaccines.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is searching for 45-year-old Mario Borriello Jr. who was last seen on Aug. 8 at 7275 Carolina Beach Road in Wilmington; he is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 140 pounds (brown hair and short black hair) and anyone with information is urged to call 911.  WECT
  • The NC State Bureau of Investigation launched an inquiry on Thursday into a secret camera installed in an office at Cape Fear Community College where New Hanover County Sheriff’s deputies work—District Attorney Jason Smith and Sheriff Ed McMahon requested the probe.  WHQR
  • The SBI began investigating a hidden camera found in a CFCC North Campus security office—used by New Hanover County deputies—after the District Attorney requested an inquiry, and officials said that secretly filming people without their knowledge may break state law.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington’s Planning Commission voted 4-1 to recommend rezoning for a four-story apartment complex at 2929 Market Street, where the Azalea Inn now stands, moving the 120-unit workforce housing project to a Sept. 9 city council vote. Blue Ridge Atlantic Development’s plan includes 48 one-bedroom, 40 two-bedroom, and 32 three-bedroom units with a pool, playground, and business center — features that support a range of affordability levels.  Port City Daily
  • A highway near the Bladen-Columbus county border on NC 131 will be temporarily closed beginning Monday morning for drainage improvements; crews will replace three crossline pipes—each requiring about five days of closure using detours via Silver Spoon, Mount Olive School and Arthur Collier roads. The work is weather-dependent and scheduled to continue with additional closures the week of August 18.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wilmington’s police and fire departments will host the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Red Cross Donation Center at 1102 S 16th Street—donors should stay well hydrated, bring a photo ID, and may receive a free t-shirt while supplies last.  WECT
