  • Local advocacy groups protested near the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway on Wednesday morning to urge travelers not to fly with Avelo because of its ICE contract+ the protest is part of a national campaign while county officials confirmed that over $1 million in local marketing funds has been used to promote Avelo since it began operating in Wilmington in 2022.  WHQR
  • On Saturday, Aug. 16, the Cape Fear Cultural Association of India will host its second annual India Day at the Harrelson Center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free-admission event will feature Indian cuisine+ music and dance+ cultural activities while free parking remains limited.  Wilmington Star-News

  • Wilmington police are investigating an early morning shooting on Aug.9 in the 100 block of North Front Street where a fight escalated when a male suspect fired a round into the ground and a bullet fragment injured a nearby female pedestrian—she is expected to recover.  FOX Wilmington

  • Wilmington’s only indie comic festival marked its fifth year last Saturday at the Hannah Block Community Center, where cartoonists, publishers and indie artists sold comics and art.   • USDA Rural Development awarded East Arcadia a $370,000 grant to transform the town hall and fire department into a small business center—ready to serve 8—10 vendors and host community events such as fundraisers, craft shows, and live music events.  FOX Wilmington

  • Residents in Wilmington can enjoy many free activities in the Cape Fear region—options include museum visits at the Cameron Art Museum, walking tours with the Historic Wilmington Foundation, bird walks at Wrightsville Beach, and free outdoor movies at Carolina Beach Lake Park.
