- ➤ Actor and comedian Orlando Jones will host the charity comedy show 'Standup for Oops' at 7 p.m. on Aug 22 at The Terraces on Sir Tyler to benefit the local Oops Foundation that supports at-risk youth, with Loni Love headlining the event. Jones—who serves on the foundation's board—got involved through founder Atiba Johnson because of his local ties. WWAY
- ➤ Trinity United Methodist Church will host a Back to School Block Party on Aug. 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1403 Market St, offering a fully stocked bookbag giveaway, a free mobile grocery store with food bags, haircuts from Great Clips, free food and drinks, balloon art and face painting. - ➤ Wilmington officials reported that half a dozen fatal crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists have occurred in 2025, with increasing traffic, speeding, and cell phone use making streets riskier. - ➤ Wilmington police arrested 32-year-old Juawan Ferguson Saturday night after his ATV hit a deputy and damaged a police car downtown—officers also found a gun in his backpack. WWAY
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ New Hanover High School (built between 1920 and 1922 to replace Wilmington High School) has long served as a community landmark with a legacy that includes state sports championships and memorial dedications. - ➤ The EPA allocated $409.4 million to upgrade NC drinking water systems—preparing them to handle floods, fires, and other severe weather events.
