- ➤ On Saturday, the New Hanover County Arboretum held its Ability Garden Plant Sale that offered houseplants + herbs + annuals priced from $2 to $12 with all proceeds going to the therapeutic horticulture program that empowers underserved residents. - ➤ A candlelight vigil will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at 90 Bald Cypress Circle to honor teen Landyn Jacobs (a rising senior at East Columbus High School) who died on August 14 at 4:00 a.m. when his car crashed into a tree on Canal Cove Road in Lake Waccamaw while he was heading to work. - ➤ On Saturday the Cape Fear Cultural Association of India held India Day at the Harrelson Center in downtown Wilmington, where residents enjoyed Indian music, food, and performances—organizers stressed the importance of youth involvement to help pass on cultural traditions for future events. WWAY
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in the Lower Atlantic region held steady for the second week, with regular fuel averaging $2.92 per gallon on Monday—about 6.4% lower than the national price. The price had risen by 4 cents from last month and was 9% higher a year ago. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Labor reported that new unemployment filings in North Carolina fell from 3,419 to 3,396 for the week ending August 9—showing a modest decline in jobless claims. National unemployment claims also dropped from 227,000 to 224,000 last week. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ The National Hurricane Center reported Hurricane Erin strengthened to a dangerous Category 4 storm on August 16 (130 mph winds) and its northward swing should keep it off the coast even though long swells may affect boaters from Monday. A weak low pressure off the coast is being monitored for slight development before conditions turn unfavorable. Wilmington Star-News
