- ➤ A car crashed into a gas line at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center on New Centre Drive and caused an explosion that burned the roof, injured three firefighters, and forced nearby businesses to evacuate—one firefighter suffered severe burns while an impaired driver was detained and the street remains closed. - ➤ Wilmington officials say Hurricane Erin will impact our coast today — its outer bands bring dangerous rip currents, high waves, and minor flooding — which has led local beach towns to issue no-swimming advisories. A flood advisory and small craft warning are in effect — urging residents and visitors to stay off the water — as the storm moves north. Wilmington Star-News
