ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Four firefighters were injured in Tuesday’s explosion at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center—three were treated and released while a fourth suffered severe burns—and Ellie Coleman Comedy will host a benefit show Sunday, August 24 at Station 2 to support them.  WWAY

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Coastal communities are bracing for Hurricane Erin as authorities close beaches and issue tropical storm warnings from Beaufort Inlet to the NC-Virginia border, with lifeguards at Wrightsville Beach rescuing swimmers and North Carolina Governor Josh Stein declaring a state of emergency — officials warn of dangerous rip currents and 100 mph winds as the storm is expected to strengthen into Friday — and residents are urged to stay clear of the water.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Wilmington City Council voted unanimously on August 19 for Chief Ryan Zuidema — a veteran from Lynchburg with nearly 29 years of service — to lead the police department. He will begin his role on September 22 and plans to work closely with city leaders to build a strong, safe community.  Port City Daily
  • Governor Josh Stein warned coastal residents that Hurricane Erin will bring strong storm surge and flooding as it nears tonight into tomorrow morning, and he said roadways on Highway 12 may become impassable—especially on the Outer Banks. State agencies and swift water rescue teams are ready while Dare, Hyde, and Currituck counties have declared states of emergency and issued mandatory evacuations.  WECT
