COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Wilmington Professional Firefighter Association Local 129 is urging community donations through official fundraisers such as its Venmo account @Local129 and a Comedy for a Cause benefit show on Sunday evening at Station No. 2—proceeds go directly to help firefighters injured in Tuesday’s gas line explosion at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center. Four of the injured firefighters have been released from the hospital while one with burns is scheduled for delayed surgery in the coming days.  Port City Daily

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Two days ago after a driver struck a gas line that caused a gas explosion at Eastern Carolina Veterinary Medical Center, five Wilmington firefighters suffered injuries from burns to concussions and now face long recoveries—comedy shows at Station Number 2 on South Fifth Avenue are scheduled for August 24th to help raise support since no official GoFundMe exists.  WWAY

CRIME NEWS

  • Wilmington man Edwin Vaughan was sentenced by a judge to a minimum of 41 years in prison for shooting at police near UNCW on January 26, 2024 — officers reported he fired five rounds after they responded to a panhandling complaint at the corner of College Road and Randall Parkway.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College has announced a new dental clinic at the Dan and Sheila Saklad Health and Human Services Center that will offer advanced simulation mannequins for hands-on training. The expanded clinic supports the growing Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs—meeting a critical need for local dental care.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A new report found that North Carolina spent over $54 million on litter cleanup in 2023, with Wilmington ranking third at about $8.52 per person—most litter is plastic and harms local ecosystems. The report recommends a bottle deposit program and new rules on single-use plastics—steps state lawmakers may consider in the 2025-2026 session.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Wilmington Police Department reported that traffic lights at the intersection of Gordon Road and Market Street malfunctioned—drivers must now follow a pattern with right turns only from Gordon Road and straight/right moves from Market Street while using alternate routes like Military Cutoff Road and Station Road, and delays are expected for most of the day.  FOX Wilmington
