COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A popular food event will take place on Nov. 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bluewater Grill parking lot — featuring over 40 tasting booths — to raise funds for Meals on Wheels that delivers 600 meals each weekend and another 600 during the holidays.  Port City Daily
  • Freeman Park in Carolina Beach reopened for vehicle traffic today at 6 a.m. following Hurricane Erin — visitors should drive above the high tide line as lingering effects may keep tides higher than normal.  WECT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Eastern Carolina Veterinary Referral building on New Centre Drive exploded—halting traffic and injuring five firefighters. The clinic lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and will rebuild on the site once demolition begins as the city expedites permitting.  WECT

CRIME NEWS

  • A long investigation led officers to arrest Guy Braxton Williams on August 19 on a $1.5 million bond after a drug bust at his Wilmington home on McClammy Street—officers seized fentanyl pills, MDMA, cocaine, marijuana, two handguns, two rifles, and a stolen dirt bike.  WECT
  • 28-year-old Derrick Jones of Wilmington pleaded guilty to charges from a Dec 26, 2023 shooting at Anointed Creations Event Space on Castle Hayne Road—detectives determined a personal feud with Larry Demaro Brown led to the fatal incident and Jones received a 20 to 25-year prison sentence.  WECT
  • Derrick Jones, a Wilmington man, was convicted of second-degree murder for a fatal shooting that occurred during a party in 2023 — he pleaded guilty to illegal gun possession as a convicted felon and received a sentence of 20-25 years in prison.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials including Mayor Saffo and City Council members will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Aug. 25 at 10 a.m. at 4088 River Road for a new $2.42 million roundabout designed to improve traffic flow—construction will last six months.  WECT
