  • Smoothie King unveiled its first-ever food menu yesterday that offers loaded toast and protein box options made with premium ingredients — more items will be added early next year. Loyalty members can get a special deal with a loaded toast and a 20‑ounce smoothie starting nationwide on Sept. 2.  Wilmington Star-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Brooklyn Arts Center is a historic venue built in 1889 that celebrates its 136th anniversary this year and now hosts weddings, concerts, and other events after a near-demolition in the mid-1990s. Local owners Jason and Tara Tatum restored the building with original church features—such as salvaged wood for the stage and lobby—preserving a significant piece of Wilmington history.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Opera House Theatre Company announced its 41st season at Thalian Hall that will run from Dec. 31 to Aug. 23, featuring six productions—Rock of Ages, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Wild Party, Gypsy, Crazy For You and West Side Story.  WECT
  • Despite being the most-watched Netflix series for weeks, the Wilmington-shot drama The Waterfront was canceled after its first season—dealing a blow to local film industry workers who counted on a second season for jobs. Creator Kevin Williamson thanked his cast and crew while the future of similar projects in Wilmington remains uncertain.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Hanover High School completed nearly $8 million in renovations before the first day of class, adding new classrooms, a modern front office, and rebuilds that boost the building’s safety—this update renews the school’s spirit for a fresh start.  WECT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The intersection of Kings Drive and Spring Branch Road was closed on August 26 for an emergency water main repair, and drivers were advised to detour via Kenningston Street or Spring View Drive as the repair lasted for four hours.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Meine from Novant Health said the new American Heart Association guideline on high blood pressure focused on lifestyle changes—especially cutting down on alcohol—to help lower the risk of hypertension. The guideline advises that men limit their alcohol consumption to two drinks and women to one drink to keep blood pressure healthy.  WECT
