CRIME NEWS

  • A Wilmington man—66-year-old James Yokeley—was arrested on child abuse charges after officers said he added illegal pills to his granddaughters’ Dairy Queen ice cream on August 8th, and preliminary tests showed the substance to be a Schedule I narcotic.  WWAY
  • A car crash at the intersection of S. Kerr Avenue and Randall Parkway led Wilmington police to arrest 47-year-old James Flythe, a wanted man from Newark who fled SWAT on South College Road and ran a red light—about 700 dosage units of fentanyl were recovered from his vehicle—which concluded a month-long investigation that also resulted in the arrest of 19-year-old Armond Hughley at a nearby residence.  FOX Wilmington

CULTURE NEWS

  • During the Labor Day holiday weekend, Wilmington is hosting live theatre, comedy, film screenings and concerts at venues such as Thalian Hall and Carolina Beach Boardwalk — residents can enjoy an original play starting today, fireworks on August 29 and music events through Aug. 31.  Wilmington Star-News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In 2024, visitors spent nearly $1.14 billion in New Hanover County, a 1.5% increase from 2023 that placed the county among the top eight in spending statewide—tourism jobs rose to 7,003 and room occupancy taxes surpassed $25 million, supporting projects like beach renourishment, the convention center and ocean safety programs. These results show that tourism continues to be a strong driver of the local economy.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The New Hanover County school board voted down two resolutions on Monday—one to change state tobacco laws under Solly’s Law and another to release Leandro funds—saying the matters were beyond the district's role. Board members said they want to focus on safety, academic achievement and clear communication.  Port City Daily

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Wilmington will hold the grand opening of its new City Hall at Skyline Center on Sept. 8 at 8:30 a.m.—the event will include a city seal unveiling, a council meeting, remarks by Mayor Bill Saffo and other officials, a ribbon cutting, and a reception with a tour of the renovated space.  Port City Daily
  • Government officials led by U.S. Rep. David Rouzer met in Wilmington on Aug.27 to discuss a surface transportation reauthorization bill that will fund roads, bridges and rail projects with a goal for early summer passage. NCDOT Secretary Joey Hopkins and other speakers stressed the need for consistent funding to modernize infrastructure — a critical step to avoid costly delays.  Wilmington Star-News
