  • Mother Hubbard's Cupboard, an all-volunteer nonprofit in downtown Wilmington, helps prevent hunger for low-income households and food desert residents in the Cape Fear area by providing nutritious food to over 73,000 clients—funded mainly by private donations, competitive grants, and food drives.  Wilmington Star-News

CRIME NEWS

  • Keisha Baldwin was sentenced to life without parole after a five-day trial for the 2022 murder of Tammy Hayes, who died after being shot at the Edge Lounge on S. 5th Avenue in Wilmington—officers arrested Baldwin hours after the incident.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cape Fear Community College unveiled its new dental clinic lab in the Health and Human Services building to boost hands-on training amid a rising need for dental hygienists — the expanded facility now offers 30 operatories compared to the previous 10. The update will help more students enroll and better serve growing local demand.  WWAY
  • Cape Fear Community College is hosting a Business, Accounting, Information Technology, and Apprenticeships Career Fair on Sept. 11 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the BB&T Auditorium at its North Campus in Castle Hayne — local employers will meet with job seekers to discuss career opportunities and internships.  WECT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The NC Division of Coastal Management awarded more than $2.25 million in grants to local governments for 10 projects aimed at improving public access to beaches and coastal waterways—New Hanover County will add ADA features to its Trails End Waterfront Access and Ocean Isle Beach will replace its non-ADA dune crossover for wider, wheelchair-accessible access.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local, state and federal leaders met Wednesday in Wilmington to discuss a new five-year transportation bill that will provide steady funding for roads, bridges, and railways. They reviewed funding challenges on projects like the Hampstead Bypass and Cape Fear Memorial Bridge replacement—steps designed to support major local infrastructure projects.  Port City Daily
  • On Thursday, New Hanover County commissioners voted unanimously to restore 14 nurse positions in every school, reversing a June budget freeze that cut roughly $1.6 million from nurse staffing. The move returns coverage to pandemic levels—allowing the county to begin advertising for the new positions immediately.  WECT
