COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coastal Horizons hosted its fourth annual National Overdose Awareness Day event last Sunday to bring together resource groups offering housing, support, and free Narcan to people facing overdose risks. Jason Black said the event (funded by the City of Wilmington) linked those in need to treatment and helped break the stigma around drug overdoses.  FOX Wilmington
  • Meals on Wheels has been serving hot meals to home-bound seniors in Cape Fear since 1990. Golden Corral on New Center Drive — along with Jaguar Land Rover Cape Fear, provides transport and volunteers to deliver meals every weekend from Castle Hayne to Kure Beach Village.  WWAY

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Bystanders rescued a driver from a burning car after a two-vehicle wreck on Randolphville Road in Bolivia on Sunday (fire crews later put out the flames and no injuries have been reported).  FOX Wilmington

CRIME NEWS

  • Deputies say 22-year-old Demere Ballard broke into a Northchase home while a resident was inside calling for help and refused to exit, then fought officers—causing minor injuries—and now faces charges for breaking and entering and assaulting a deputy while held on a $40,000 secured bond with a court hearing on Sept. 2.  FOX Wilmington

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Amazon premieres The Runarounds, a TV series about a young rock band that filmed key scenes in Wilmington — downtown spots such as Prost Biergarten and the Wilmington Convention Center were used, and its soundtrack features music by local artists. The band will perform at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater on Sept. 14 as part of a national tour.  Wilmington Star-News
