- ➤ Oceanfest announced Oysterpalooza 2025—an event that will raise funds for its grant program and philanthropic projects and is scheduled to take place later this year. WECT
- ➤ Community groups are hosting fall events across Cape Fear, with a market in Shallotte on Sept.20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—Wilmington Riverfest is set for Oct.4—Oct.5, a Fall Fest at Maides Park for Oct.10, Belville hosting a fall festival on Oct.4 and a Halloween Trunk or Treat on Oct.24, Topsail’s Autumn Festival from Oct.17—Oct.19, Burgaw’s Autumn Fest on Oct.18, and a Brunswick County Fall Festival on Oct.30. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Wilmington stars in a new Amazon Prime Video series called The Runarounds that debuted Monday and follows high school graduates trying to form a rock band. Local creator Jonas Pate filmed the series here—using downtown streets, beach scenes, and local venues including Greenfield Lake Amphitheater, where the band will perform live on Sept. 14 while also featuring his daughter in her first major role. - ➤ Archaeologists from East Carolina University discovered four 18th-century shipwrecks near Brunswick Town this spring, including wooden timbers and artifacts that support the identification of La Fortuna—an enemy vessel that exploded during a 1748 battle. ECU conservationists are analyzing the finds to learn more about early maritime history in the Cape Fear region. FOX Wilmington
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ New Hanover County had a record-breaking year in visitor spending that brought in over $1 billion in tourism revenue in 2024, and current occupancy tax numbers for 2025 show a 4% increase over the same period last year. The Wilmington and Beaches Convention and Visitors Bureau credits strong growth in food and beverage and other attractions—helping boost business in the area throughout the year. WECT

- ➤ Freddy Simpson died at 49 in early August after going into cardiac arrest while trying to secure his unhooked boat trailer in rainy, cold conditions in New Hanover County—his organ donation now will help save at least three lives and bring his family a sense of closure. WECT

- ➤ UNCW has finalized its 2025-26 men’s basketball schedule with a record 20 games at Trask Coliseum, including 31 games and two home exhibitions on October 18 and October 26. The Seahawks will begin conference play on December 29 and host the Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic during Thanksgiving. WECT
