COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since 2012, Cape Fear Critters Animal Rescue and Sanctuary has helped many animals in the Cape Fear area—on Friday, July 25, Tandy Chevalier and her daughter Haley O'Briant cared for turtles, rabbits, opossums, and a pony at their Winnabow facility.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Wilmington Boat Show will take place at the Wilmington Convention Center and along the Cape Fear River from October 10-12 and will feature boat dealers, marine gear, a fishing expo with hands-on demonstrations, and Kids’ Fishing Clinics where children receive a free rod and reel. Special guest Chris Douglas will join the event, and free parking and water ferry rides will be available at Battleship Park.  WECT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The new Element Hotel by Westin opened its six-story, 139-room facility at Mayfaire yesterday—its ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the official launch after converting a former restaurant into a hotel focused on health, wellness, and sustainable design. The hotel offers modern amenities such as in-room kitchens and spa-inspired bathrooms for both short- and long-term stays.  Wilmington Star-News

CRIME NEWS

  • A violent crash happened on Aug. 27 at the S. Kerr and Randall intersection when police chased 47-year-old James Flythe, who was wanted in a drugs case, and he hit a Hadi Heating and Air truck with no one hurt before SWAT arrested him on charges of trafficking and fentanyl possession.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Domestic violence shelters have seen their VOCA funds drop to about $25 million in 2024 and may fall to roughly $16.5 million in 2025—one shelter in New Hanover County lost funding for two full-time positions starting October 1 and serves about 1,400 people each year while asking local and state officials for support.  WECT
  • Leaders in Wilmington are studying a new sales tax across New Hanover, Brunswick + Pender counties to help pay for big transportation projects like a new Cape Fear Memorial Bridge and road improvements. They will ask local voters if they support using bonds to raise funds so the region can avoid a toll and fix roads, too.  Port City Daily

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents picketed outside the county commissioners meeting on Sept. 2 to demand that Novant Health improve patient safety and care at the county hospital — a former doctor and local community members urged a five-year improvement plan with clear goals and regular updates. Commissioners said they will meet with Novant Health leadership to discuss how to correct these issues.  Port City Daily
