COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today marked the last day of the annual Pooch Plunge at Legion Center Pool where dozens of pups and their owners enjoyed the event; next year the event will be held the weekend after Labor Day.  WWAY

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Four chain restaurants are set to open soon in Leland—McAlister's Deli will open on September 15 at New Pointe Boulevard and a take-out Little Caesars will have its grand opening in the first week of October. Panda Express is still under construction and Texas Roadhouse remains under review for a 2026 opening.  Wilmington Star-News

CRIME NEWS

  • The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office arrested 35-year-old Shan Shawon Hobbs in Castle Hayne after deputies responded on Saturday at 3329 Davis Lane where Rebia and Eric Hobbs were found fatally shot—Hobbs now faces two counts of 1st degree murder and will appear in court Monday morning.  WWAY

EDUCATION NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report released its ranking of over 21,000 high schools, with Topsail High School earning the top spot among Wilmington-area public schools at No. 85 in North Carolina. The report showed 51 state schools in the top 10 percent nationally alongside schools in Brunswick, New Hanover, and Pender counties.  Wilmington Star-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local ordinances in Wilmington and nearby towns prohibit sleeping in vehicles on public property after certain hours & may lead to fines, removal of personal belongings, or even trespassing charges. Officials enforce these rules, so drivers should check their local codes before using their car as a place to rest.  Wilmington Star-News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Fishermen and kayakers in Wilmington enjoy Sutton Lake—an old man-made reservoir built to cool a power plant that now offers excellent largemouth bass fishing north of the Port City. Duke Energy manages the lake and carries out routine testing to keep the water safe for recreation while the fish population remains strong after past storm damage.  Wilmington Star-News
