- ➤ Special Olympics New Hanover County is seeking 250 volunteers for its Fall Games — the event needs help with setup, working stations, and cheering in shifts on Oct. 17 and Oct. 24. Volunteers will work from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 17 and from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Oct. 24. WECT
- ➤ On September 7 at Legion Stadium pool, about 80 dogs dove into the water as part of Wilmington’s annual Pooch Plunge marking the end of the summer swim season. The YMCA of Southeastern NC hosted the event—charging $5 per dog and raising around $3,000 while water-loving breeds played fetch and chased tennis balls. WHQR

- ➤ A firefighter severely burned in last month's explosion is now recovering at home with his family—other injured firefighters received treatment after a car crash triggered a gas explosion at an animal hospital on New Centre Drive. WWAY

- ➤ Reggie Watts will headline the closing night of the 31st Cucalorus Film Festival with a live performance at CFCC’s Wilson Center on Sunday, November 23rd at 7:00 p.m.—he will also lend his voice to Michael Langan’s short film Cosmic Cinnamon Roll, which screens earlier in the festival. WWAY
- ➤ The 10th Annual Native Plant Festival runs from September 17-21 and will feature evening speaker sessions at the New Hanover County Arboretum, a shopping day on September 20 with local vendors, and a self-guided garden tour on September 21 that visits 11 local garden spaces. - ➤ Alliance for Cape Fear Trees is seeking volunteers for its fall Tree Steward program that will train participants to plant, water, mulch, stake and care for Wilmington’s trees; volunteers will attend four Saturday classes through October and commit to four to six hours each month—classes begin Oct. 4 and continue on Oct. 11, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25—supporting better care of our urban forest. - ➤ The EPA announced last week it intends to rescind rules for PFAS chemicals—GenX, PFHxS, and PFNA—and will propose new standards this fall to follow the Safe Drinking Water Act. Meanwhile, Chemours submitted a revised permit application in August to boost production at its Fayetteville Works plant as state officials review the request. Port City Daily
