- ➤ A community gathering to honor Major General Joseph McNeil will be held this weekend as his wife, Ina Brown McNeil, escorts his remains along Major General Joseph McNeil Commemorative Way on Saturday, Sept. 13 from noon to 12:30 p.m.—residents are encouraged to bring signs and wear symbols of unity to show support for his legacy as a military leader and civil rights icon. - ➤ Alliance for Cape Fear Trees is recruiting Wilmington volunteers for its Tree Steward program that offers free training from certified arborists to care for the urban forest. Training sessions are held on four Saturdays in October from 9 AM to 12 PM at different sites—volunteers must attend at least three sessions and commit to four to six hours each month. WWAY
- ➤ Today, several memorial events honor victims of the 9/11 attacks in the Cape Fear region—Ocean Isle Beach will host a dedication ceremony with lunch at 12:30 p.m., Wrightsville Beach will hold a remembrance at the Public Safety Building at 8:45 a.m., and the USS Battleship North Carolina will light up red, white, and blue at sunset for Patriot Day. - ➤ Cape Fear Community College will host its 4th Annual Fall Lecture Series featuring Dr. Julie-Ann Scott-Pollock’s talk on raising boys at Union Station Auditorium on September 16 at 11:00 a.m.—12:15 p.m., a Chinese calligraphy workshop by Dr. Huiming Xu on October 14 at Downtown Campus S Building, Room 002, and a Hip Hop 101 session by Brandon 'Bigg B' Hickman on November 6 at Union Station Auditorium, with all events free and open to the public. - ➤ At the historical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season yesterday, no named storms were recorded as forecasters tracked two tropical waves—experts warn conditions may favor storm development later this month. Local residents are urged to review emergency plans and gather supplies since storms forming near the coast can intensify quickly. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ The NC Department of Transportation will run its Fall Litter Sweep event from Sept. 13 to Sept. 27 to let residents help clean roads—maintenance crews will also haul away full bags while volunteers receive free cleanup supplies from local offices. WECT
- ➤ Today, the Cape Fear Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation launched its Surfboard Recycling Project to keep old surfboards out of landfills by partnering with South End Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach and 50 South Surf Shop in Topsail Island—community members can drop off their boards during regular hours. - ➤ Wilmington leaders asked county officials to restart funding and meetings for the Cape Fear Homeless Continuum of Care after a $27,300 cut in this year’s fiscal budget—City Councilwoman Salette Andrews and others sent a letter urging renewed support for addressing homelessness together. The call comes as local officials stress that the city cannot fix the issue alone. WWAY
- ➤ Governor Josh Stein signed Executive Order 25 to relaunch the Interagency Council for Coordinating Homelessness Programs—designed to coordinate government, nonprofit and private efforts to provide safe and affordable housing for those affected by homelessness caused by Hurricane Helene; the council is co-chaired by state health and military officials and comes as over 11,500 people experienced homelessness last year. - ➤ After a camping ban passed on Sept. 9, Wilmington City Council is reviewing proposals to assist homeless people—one plan to use surplus property for a low barrier shelter and one to hire full-time social workers. - ➤ Josie May, a 3-year-old Wilmington girl, was diagnosed with leukemia after her parents noticed she looked pale and complained of ear pain at the end of June.
