COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A local non-profit is asking volunteers to help build bunk beds for children who have no beds today at Lowe’s Home Improvement at 5110 College Road in Monkey Junction—volunteers will work from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. while tools and food are provided. The group Sleep in Heavenly Peace has built 775 beds in three years and hopes to build 10,000 beds later this year. FOX Wilmington
- ➤ Today, nearly seven years after Hurricane Florence struck on September 14th, over 300 UNCW students, faculty and staff are volunteering at local organizations such as the Diaper Bank—an event that celebrates Wilmington's community strength. - ➤ Today, a funeral service for Major General Joseph McNeil is held at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church from 1 to 3 p.m.—a community gathering from 12 to 12:30 p.m. takes place before the service and burial will follow at Pine Forest Cemetery; McNeil, a Wilmington native and member of the Greensboro Four who died Sept. 4 from Parkinson’s disease, is honored in the ceremony. - ➤ The CUE Center for Missing Persons will hold its 31st anniversary fundraising event on September 20 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Wilmington — the event will feature rides, vendors, pig picking and chicken, classic car displays, and tables to raise awareness for missing persons and unsolved homicide cases. - ➤ Island Montessori Charter School in Carolina Beach received a national award from Building Hope at its Impact Summit in Miami for strong community engagement — selected from nearly 200 charter schools in 41 states — and earned $20,000 to support its service learning program. WECT

- ➤ Nurses marched on Senator Ted Budd’s downtown Wilmington office to protest recent VA staffing and budget cuts+ the rally argued that privatizing the VA could harm local veterans, urging lawmakers to review current plans+ supporters called for restoring full services. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Wrightsville Beach changed its land-use ordinance after the board of aldermen voted on Sept. 11 to replace the special use permit system with a conditional zoning process — a move that will require developers to host three public hearings and allow more resident input. The new rules keep existing special use permits in place while aiming to improve transparency in development decisions. Port City Daily

- ➤ New Hanover County Health and Human Services is extending clinic hours for school-required vaccines at 1650 Greenfield Street in Wilmington on Tuesday, September 16, Tuesday, September 23 and Thursday, September 25; families with insurance should bring their card.
