ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Monday morning, the Wilmington Fire Department responded to a call reporting a City of Wilmington garbage truck on fire at Malpass Avenue + Orchard Avenue, and crews remained on scene as the situation unfolded. WWAY
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The 26th annual Landfall Foundation Art Show & Sale will be held this week at the Country Club of Landfall to display works by top local artists that will benefit nonprofits in the arts, education and health. The art sale will run from Sept. 17-19 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. WECT
- ➤ Wilmington resident Sydney Penny began her acting career as a child singing with her Western swing musician father, Hank Penny, and later worked with Clint Eastwood—she appeared in classic shows like Fame and The Twilight Zone, earned Daytime Emmy nominations for her soap roles including All My Children, and returned to the screen in 2022 with the Wilmington-shot film Birdies. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Cape Fear Community College has launched new Landscaping and Horticulture courses—16-week programs costing $190 that teach hands-on skills in pest management, landscape construction, and plant care. The training fits into the college's degree program to help students build a career in outdoor work. WWAY
- ➤ Cape Fear Community College is expanding its Landscaping and Horticulture courses in Wilmington to train students in outdoor skills for careers in gardening and landscape services. The 16-week courses cost $190 each and cover pest management—landscape construction—and plant materials. FOX Wilmington
- ➤ Communities In Schools of Cape Fear received a three year $900,000 Endowment grant to support ten schools with up to $750 per classroom for supplies plus $5,000 per school each year for enrichment activities and teacher appreciation events. The grant will help improve classroom environments in lower income neighborhoods. WHQR

- ➤ Sean Guerrero, a longtime Wilmington resident running for a city council seat, withdrew his candidacy on Sept 12 due to unforeseen circumstances—leaving seven candidates for three open spots. The candidate forum scheduled for Oct 8 will provide local voters the chance to hear from the remaining contenders. Port City Daily
- ➤ Carolina Beach has restarted work on a nearly $2 million boardwalk restroom that meets ADA standards after the project was paused in May over safety concerns ahead of the summer crowd — the town now expects to finish it by early spring, with costs covered by room occupancy taxes. Boardwalk businesses, which were affected by the halt, welcome the new facility to better serve visitors. WECT
