BUSINESS NEWS

  • Avelo Airlines announced today that its Wilmington International Airport flight schedule will extend through spring 2026—giving residents more travel choices for spring break.  WWAY

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Cape Fear Literacy Council has announced its Fall Adult Storytelling Series that will run from Sept 23 to Oct 28 at Azalea Station in Wilmington’s Cargo District—each event starting at 5:30 p.m. with a Meet and Mingle at 5 p.m. and a Q&A following, and funds raised will support free adult education programs.  WECT
  • The Cape Fear Literacy Council invites Wilmington residents to a six-week fall Adult Storytelling Series at Azalea Station in the Cargo District. The series—running from Tuesday, September 23 to October 28—will start each evening with a Meet and Mingle at 5:00 p.m. followed by a program at 5:30 p.m., and tickets cost $20 per event or $100 for the season.  WWAY
  • The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra announced its 2025–2026 season, which runs from Sept. 20 to April 25 at Cape Fear Community College Wilson Center and features an opening night with Peter Askim and a concert with Tift Merritt. The season includes concerts dedicated to Dvořák and Colberg, a young people’s concert, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana.  FOX Wilmington

EDUCATION NEWS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • One year ago on Sept. 16, 2024, Brunswick County was hit by PTC8, which brought heavy rains and severe flooding that damaged roads, businesses, and homes in the Cape Fear Region — schools were delayed and highways were washed out, leaving residents stranded. The county is now updating flood zone mapping, improving communication with residents, and hiring a recovery manager to prepare better for future storms.  WECT
  • Andrew Jones was appointed to the New Hanover County Airport Authority on July 21 for a term of four years; he is a Wilmington native and managing partner at Michael Best and Friedrich LLP and has served on several community nonprofit boards.  FOX Wilmington
  • Leland Town Council approved a sufficiency agreement for the Jackey’s Creek annexation after plans for a baseball stadium were dropped in 2024—this step allows the developer to connect to town utilities and move forward with the 1,400-acre mixed-use project. The town will hold a public hearing on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m.—residents have raised concerns about traffic and environmental impacts.  Port City Daily
  • Eastbound lanes of Market Street between 19th and 20th streets will close on Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. as city crews remove a storm-damaged laurel oak tree—set to be replaced next season.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • Trillium Health Resources will host a Post Disaster Simulation at Brunswick Community College's Odell Williamson Auditorium to show steps to follow in the weeks after a disaster—participants will use assigned profiles to receive supplies, file insurance claims, and get medical help including medication and services. The free event will be open to the public on Oct. 2 from 8:30 a.m. to noon.  FOX Wilmington
