COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Sayaun Dent Memorial Foundation held a memorial reveal Saturday afternoon at Baldwin Branch Church Cemetery in Elizabethtown to honor Sayaun Dent, who died after a truck failed to stop at a stop sign at the Marsh Road and Highway 41 intersection. His memorial includes a basketball jersey and sneakers—symbols of his passion for the game—as his family and community continue to celebrate his legacy.  WECT
  • Today, the Live Fearlessly Foundation hosted its first-ever benefit concert at Waterman’s Brewing to honor late founder Jacob Venditti — all proceeds supported families affected by cystic fibrosis.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Two Confederate monuments removed from downtown Wilmington in 2020 were moved to Valor Memorial Park in Davidson County — a private park managed by Commemorating Honor, Inc.; the city no longer owns these statues that were once held by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and removed amid public safety concerns during protests. Photos have yet to confirm if the monuments are currently on display.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The Live Fearlessly Foundation hosted its first Live Fearlessly Festival—honoring the late founder Jacob Venditti—to pay tribute to his legacy.  WECT
  • The fourth Cape Fear Latinos Festival was held on Sept. 20 in Wilmington—marking a colorful event that began with a parade at Riverfront Park and continued at the Live Oak Bank Pavilion.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNC Wilmington will re-open tomorrow, Sept. 22, with enhanced security measures after a campus lockdown later called a false alarm—police now maintain increased presence at main entrances, and extra law enforcement personnel are assigned to patrol key areas including the Center for Marine Science, while residence halls remain staffed over the weekend.  Wilmington Star-News
  • Louis Bourgault, a World War II veteran who left high school at 17 to serve his country, got his long-awaited diploma from Battleship North Carolina last Saturday at a museum meeting. His old friend and tour guide Hugh Donohue helped recover his records and secure city council approval so he could officially graduate as a member of the class of 1943.  WWAY
