CULTURE NEWS

  • Art in the Yard is held in Carolina and Kure Beaches to showcase local artisans and their crafts — the four-year event has grown from 39 to over 60 artists and features diverse work such as painting, pottery, fabric arts, glass art, and wood turning.  WWAY
  • Yardbarker reported that two TV series filmed in Wilmington — One Tree Hill and Dawson's Creek — were named among the most memorable love triangles for their on-screen romances. One Tree Hill featured a triangle among Brooke, Peyton and Lucas while Dawson's Creek showcased Joey, Dawson and Pacey.  Wilmington Star-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCW Chancellor Dr. Aswani Volety shared a video message with staff, faculty and parents ahead of classes restarting today after a false gunman threat led to Friday’s cancellations and reduced operations through Sunday — he encouraged the community to move forward from last week’s challenges.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four candidates are running for two town council seats in Surf City with election day set for November 4, as incumbents Hugh Cannady and Jeremy Shugarts face challengers Jillian Rodrigues de Miranda and Andy Pleil. Daniel Blevins withdrew after filing ended (the race is nonpartisan and council terms last four years with a monthly stipend).  Wilmington Star-News
  • A construction site at 1302 Independence Blvd. cleared most trees but left small, fenced tree protection areas required by the Wilmington Land Development Code to guard trees and their roots during building. The Alliance for Cape Fear Trees board president said developers sometimes treat tree mitigation fees as a business cost—calling for stronger steps to preserve green spaces.  Wilmington Star-News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Trask Family Farm opened its fall festivities yesterday with an expanded corn maze, a pumpkin patch, and pick-your-own flowers—offering over four miles of trails with three difficulty levels. The corn maze will remain open until the first weekend in November as the farm expects its busiest fall yet.  WWAY

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Wilmington is reviewing several housing developments including a 456-unit project at Shipyard Blvd, a nearly complete 40-unit Midtown & Main at Independence Blvd, Covil Village with 65 units, and a 10.23-acre project called 142 Switchyard with 60 three-bedroom units—additional plans include Sapphire on 5th with 124 units and a 40-unit development at 1320 Independence Boulevard that has raised traffic safety concerns.  Wilmington Star-News
