COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration is open for the fifth annual Brunswick Heritage Riverside Ride—an event where cyclists of all ages ride 16 miles from Phoenix Park in Navassa to Belville Riverwalk Park and back—scheduled for Sept. 27. Riders must wear helmets and check their bikes for safety, and pre-registration closes at noon today with walk-up spots available on the ride morning.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher will host the Femme in STEM event this weekend from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.—offering thirty organizations interactive activities to help young girls explore science and learn new skills.  WECT
  • New Hanover County Office of Civic Engagement, the Sheriff’s Office, and DHHS will host Law Enforcement and Me on Sept. 25 at Government Center Drive to teach deaf and hard of hearing people how to communicate with law enforcement—ASL interpreters, captioning services, and a light dinner will be provided.  WECT
  • Cape Fear Community College has seen a 77% increase in its associate nursing enrollment and a 67% rise in practical nursing enrollment, aided by a $10 million grant for scholarships. Local student Bianca Skinner said the grant eased costs so she could focus on her studies — and she plans to work in Wilmington after graduating in May.  FOX Wilmington

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Four Bald Head Island residents—Slaughter Fitz-Hugh, Jesse Hermann, Andrew R. Hano Sr. and Debra Drumheller—are running for two expiring seats on the village council. The election will be held on Nov. 4 with early voting starting Oct. 16.  Wilmington Star-News
  • City staff presented Vision Zero and a plan on Monday to install 56 speed humps along seven streets after nine people died in crashes since January, and council members questioned the need for additional engineering staff and extra funds. Council voted Tuesday to use money from the motor vehicle tax and seek grants to support the efforts — the proposals aimed to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.  Port City Daily
  • Luke Waddell, owner of Cadence Realty, is seeking re-election to one of three seats on Wilmington City Council. He emphasizes strong leadership in public safety, infrastructure and fiscal discipline while facing several opponents ahead of the Nov 4 election—early voting begins on Oct 16.  Port City Daily

  • Charlie is a 5-year-old shepherd/boxer mix featured by the New Hanover County Humane Society in Wilmington and is known for his playful spirit and love of treats — he needs a home with a fenced yard to match his strength and energy. SPORTS NEWS

  • Charles 'Hoss' Ellington was a NASCAR driver and team owner from Wilmington—he began racing in 1968 and retired from driving in 1969 after a crash, later earning five wins and $1.3 million with drivers like Donnie Allison and A.J. Foyt before being inducted into the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame in 2006. Born in Raleigh, he moved to Wilmington in 1961 to start an insulation business that supported his racing ventures.  Wilmington Star-News
  • On Sept. 23, Hoggard’s boys soccer clinched a 1—0 win over New Hanover at Scott Braswell Stadium to secure their top spot in the Carolina Coast Conference—tying the all-time series at 15—15. The Vikings will travel to Laney in two days while New Hanover is set to host them on Oct. 16.  Wilmington Star-News
  • The YMCA Wrightsville Beach Sprint Triathlon will take place on Sept. 27 and includes individual, relay, aquabike and youth events featuring a 1,350‑yard swim, an 11‑mile bike course and a 5k run that finishes at the Municipal Complex. Selected roads such as Oleander Drive, Greenville Loop Road and Causeway Drive will have closures from 7:30 a.m. until about 10:15 a.m.—law enforcement will manage traffic as cyclists pass.  Wilmington Star-News
