COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Trask Family Farms celebrated its pumpkin patch and corn maze grand opening on Sept. 20th while Barr Evergreens will open its patch at 37 Covil Ave tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church will open its volunteer-run patch on Oct. 8th — with a party on Oct. 14th and a movie night on Oct. 24th. These events prepare local residents for fall and Halloween fun.  WECT
  • Mom Gabriele Jones, whose daughter had to hide during a 2023 UNC Chapel Hill shooting, felt deep fear again when her UNCW student son was caught in a campus lockdown caused by a suspected gunman. She has organized a Free Moms event—where local moms and therapy dogs offer free hugs—to help calm stressed students and plans another session at midterms.  FOX Wilmington

  • Maria Giresi from Top Toad on Front Street said her boss was very happy about the outdoor dining proposal—local businesses see the plan as a definite plus and look forward to its benefits.  WECT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The concrete towers near Topsail Beach were built in the 1940s for a secret Navy project called Operation Bumblebee — a site for testing supersonic missiles that later became remodeled homes and earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Meteorologist Matthew Huddleston wrapped up his 121st history segment today — his final piece as he moves to a new meteorology job in Raleigh.  WWAY
  • Lighthouse Beer and Wine Festival is set for Live Oak Bank Pavilion—Riverfront Park will host the event that will offer local beers and wines for tasting.  WECT
  • The Wings Over Wrightsville Beach airshow is set for Oct. 2 from 5 to 6 p.m. near Lifeguard Station 10—between public accesses 32 and 34, where families and plane fans will see aerial displays including flyovers and the National Anthem.  WECT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNCW faculty and staff gathered at Kenan Auditorium to ask questions and share concerns after a recent threat led to a campus lockdown—Chancellor Aswani Volety and UNCW Police Chief Frank Brinkley stressed that investigators need more time to gather all the facts.  WWAY

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Richard Collier is running for Wilmington City Council with 30 years of civil engineering experience from McKim and Creed—he also served on the New Hanover County Planning Board and Wilmington Planning Commission. He said his technical background will help address growth challenges by fixing infrastructure, housing, and public safety ahead of the Nov. 4 election.  Port City Daily
  • City council approved a new social district on Tuesday night in the Brooklyn Arts District along 4th Street in Wilmington—two council members raised concerns over parking and an increased focus on alcohol. The trial will run for six months on the first and third Saturday of each month from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.  WWAY
  • Leland celebrated the arrival of a new 2024 fire engine on Wednesday at fire station 52 at 1379 River Road—firefighters, town council members, families, and the mayor took part in the push-in ceremony while the engine, purchased for $800,000 to pump 2,000 gallons per minute, replaced the 2007 model.  WWAY

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Cape Fear and across the state, providers and the public faced confusion over Covid vaccine guidelines amid mixed recommendations that left insurance coverage and eligibility for patients aged 6 months to 18 years unclear while Novant Health clinics offered the vaccine to those deemed eligible. County health departments in New Hanover and Brunswick are waiting for updated CDC guidance—raising questions on whether current procedures will soon change.  WHQR
