- ➤ Wilmington officials are planning several walking and biking projects to improve safety—from the Greenville Loop Trail set to be finished in 2026 to new curb bump outs at key intersections—to help ease pedestrian travel. The city still ranks as one of the least safe places to walk or bike, spurring ongoing efforts to upgrade its multi-use trails. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ Tropical Depression Nine is shifting east and will bring tropical rain and hazardous surf conditions to Wilmington starting Monday as local officials urge residents to stay alert. Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency on Sept 27—enabling emergency teams to mobilize resources and advise residents to secure supplies. Wilmington Star-News

- ➤ Seven candidates — including two incumbents — are running for three open seats on Wilmington City Council, with voter registration ending Oct 10. Early voting will begin Oct 16 at the Northeast Regional Library and at satellite sites on Oct 25, with final early voting on Nov 1 and Election Day on Nov 4. Wilmington Star-News
- ➤ Three candidates are running for Wilmington mayor: incumbent Bill Saffo, broker Jonathan Barfield Jr., and retired officer Billy Craig. Early voting will begin at the Northeast Regional Library on Oct. 16, the voter registration deadline is Oct. 10, and Election Day is Nov. 4 — the candidates focus on addressing housing, traffic, infrastructure and public safety challenges. - ➤ New plans in Scotts Hill will build a grocery store, restaurant and shops at the intersection of U.S. 17 and Scotts Hill Loop Road as a Circle K, bank and retail/office space are already underway. The project by Lee Properties and Robertson Loia Roof Architects and Engineers will include 350 parking spaces—residents have voiced concerns over 167 trees to be removed with only 173 mitigation trees planned.
